Your walk sounds so refreshing. It’s been cold, windy and rainy here, and a walk like that would do us all good. I like how you just took time for yourself while she slept. Don’t you feel God is close in moments like that?

I love how Michaela just gets into everything. She’s so aware of her right to make a mess!

Oh, how true this is. It is such a struggle to stay focused on the Lord and depend on Him in a world that has “no need” of Him. You’re so right: there is that voice that tells us we can have both God and the world all at once, but we know that is simply not possible. It’s one or the other, as Jesus said. It’s very difficult to be IN the world, but not OF the world, especially when everything we could ever want to have is within our grasp. We have way, way, way too much of everything here in the West, and yes, I agree that God must weep over our “richness.” Mother Teresa said that the West is, in fact, much more impoverished than any of the poor countries because our rejection of God and the unborn child leaves us spiritually impoverished, and that is much worse than being without material goods.

I struggle with these things often. The allure is always there. That’s why we need to be grounded in Him! Just know you’re not alone in these challenges. :)

Oh, this is so sweet!! Happy birthday, Michaela!! What a doll. I love the picture with her fast asleep and her fist sticking out. She looks like she’s made of porcelain in that one! Beautiful, beautiful blessing. What a year it’s been, hasn’t it?

Jess, this is a wonderful post. I don’t even know where to begin. I laughed out loud at the explanation of “stick-um!” and the way you describe Michaela searching for her shoes and other items. I can’t believe that the little bundle you introduced to us here on your blog last October is already running around the house to get her stuff. She sounds so intelligent and able.

It always seems that you and I think the same things at the same time, it really does. I, too, have been thinking of how much fun it will be to do art projects with my little guy when he’s old enough–I long for the day, but I also don’t want him to grow up! And I’ve also been thinking constantly about the thoughts expressed in the verses you posted at the end.

I got emotional for your sake while reading about how you miss your husband. My goodness, you must be a strong woman; Georges was out for a few hours tonight and I had to put Damien to sleep by myself, and I missed him so much I could hardly stand it! How in the world would I manage in your shoes?? God obviously is close to you and gives you strength. I hope your husband won’t have to be away for much longer… I guess you can look forward with hope to the day when he will be retired and can have all the time in the world to spend with you! (OK, that’s far away, but still!)

Oh, it’s so true that some form of prayerful meditation, especially based on Scripture, is essential to every day. It’s a great way to begin the morning, even if it’s just a paragraph or two. Those words really are our spiritual nourishment.

Thank you, too, for your nice comments on my blog. :) I always respond to you there, in case you didn’t know. I especially liked the story about your ring and the lost diamond–wow!! How in the world did you find that?! It turns out that my ring probably does get discolored from our hard water, but a little bit of scrubbing with a firmer brush and some toothpaste gets it off very well without damaging the ring at all. It was not easy to figure out!

Heather–that’s what people tell me. But, yes, it is all worth it! :)

Elizabeth– I love The Screwtape Letters~ def, one of my favorite Lewis books. I think you would like Perelandra it really makes you think about God, humans, the evil one and temptation. He is so good at using even fiction to make one think of God.

Jess, have you ever read “The Screwtape Letters?” I’ve read it and re-read it and re-read it…and listened to it in the car on long trips. As someone once told me, “It’s like a huge examination of conscience.” I love it. Enjoy the book! I’ve never read that one.
